We can get to the other side in two days if we don't get lost. There's an opening halfway through. We can rest outside once we get there.

[...Assuming they don't get lost. Without his Pokégear working, that's a very real possibility.]

If you see a Marill, don't just zap it. Use Thunder Wave instead.

Marill?

[... No idea what that even is...]

They're cute, round, and blue. They're also water-types, so they could be the difference between getting out of this cave and getting crushed by an Onix.

I'll keep an eye out.

[It's easy enough to tell apart from all the rock enemies, anyway.]

[The Geodude are a huge pain, too; without anything that can effectively hit them, Silver tries to avoid loose rocks and pulls Ludger away from any trouble with them as much as possible. While the two of them are moving and learning, he does his best to give him a crash course Pokémon lesson as much as possible- he explains types, moves, the local wildlife, and whatever else he can fit in between avoiding Geodude, zapping Zubat, and butting heads with the Machop, Rattata, and whatever else wants to give them trouble under this huge mountain.

But they're in luck. A small blue ball on the end of a Marill's tail is in sight, and it bounces slightly in a corner of the seemingly endless tunnels.]

[Something blue...]

Was that it?

[The cave is dark, and Silver strains to make out what it actually was.

But then he hears it move around and make noise, and there's no mistaking it.]

That's the one. [Go Ludger go make him proud-]

Uh...

[Okay, time to go over to that, and--]

Thunder wave?

[Well it. It's not moving. Did he do it??]

[He won't get the chance to find out, because Silver's chucking a Pokéball at it as quickly and precisely as he can.

It's not Crys's accuracy, but it will do. He walks over to pick up its Pokéball and immediately checks on it with his Pokédex.]

Is that it?

It is. [It's not too strong, so he better be careful and avoid overestimating it like it's one of his usual team members. A few TMs later, he lets it out and hands it a Cheri Berry to munch on.]

I'm gonna need your help for a while. I hope you don't mind.

[The Marill puffs out its cheeks a little as it munches on its berry, but it eventually nods. Better with this guy than stuck in this dumb cave...]

[Well he caught it. And if it's anything like Mareep, it probably doesn't mind.]

Do they really mind?

Not really. Maybe once in a while.

If you ask a person for help, they'll usually say yes. [But that doesn't mean they always will. Sometimes they've got stuff to do at home, or they're just a jerk, or they really don't like you.]

I usually work in serious situations. You saw that first hand. I'm not gonna drag around a reluctant partner.

[Although the Marill seems a lot more curious about Silver now that he's showed this attitude and eagerly runs a little ahead to go prove himself.]

That's true, I guess.

[It was pretty serious.

The building blew up. Details, details. But where is that thing running off to?]

We should follow him.

[Silver nods and starts going after the now very enthusiastic Marill; it doesn't even wait for orders before it starts blasting Geodude out of the way with Bubblebeam.]

He's headed the right way. Let's go. [If he's got some steam to burn, Silver's not gonna stop him.]

Okay.

[Time to go, then.]

[Onwards! The four of them don't have many problems in the cave anymore due to good type advantages. Anything Mareep can't zap, Marill can soak down. Marill can help Mareep out with Helping-Hand, too.

Silver makes sure to carefully navigate them away from overenthusiastic trainers, especially since by the time they finally reach the exit, the two Pokémon are completely exhausted.

But the fresh air is nice, and the worst of their trip through Mt. Mortar is over.]

Let's stop here for the night.

[He was pretty tired himself. A cave isn't the most comfortable place, and the rocky footing is a killer.]

Good. [He says let's stop here, but Silver starts to wander past the obvious water and into some of the some of the denser trees nearby. Even his Marill is kind of hesitant to follow him to some strange location where he can barely make out what's where, but that doesn't stop him for too long.

Of course, where Silver's headed becomes clear fairly quickly; there's a small run down shack without a door not too far from the entrance they stopped in. It's surrounded by apricot trees, which let a lot more light filter through than the dense trees everywhere else.

Silver heads straight in and immediately starts prying up some loose floorboards. Hopefully no one's taken any of his stuff...]

You've been here before?

Of course. I don't usually take the caves, though.

[Where is it, where is it- there. Silver pulls out a couple of very old and very beat up looking pillows, a blanket, a pot, some mismatched plates and utensils... There it is. Silver pulls out a flashlight and shakes it for a little while before turning it on and shedding some dim light on the shack.

There's a Metapod hanging from the ceiling, but Silver doesn't pay it any mind. Everything's coated in a pretty thick layer of dust and some grass and weeds are poking through the gaps between some of the floorboards. Parts of the wood look like they're starting to rot- this place won't last for more than a few years at best if the weather doesn't get too bad.]

Why?

[Since... yeah. It's not in the best shape, for one. For two what is that thing, and... it doesn't look like it's gonna last, yeah.]

It's faster to fly or surf over the water.

[Silver dusts off his collection of plates and pots and things and takes them outside so Marill can help rinse them properly. They are gonna be eating off of these things, after all.]

I mean why here.

[Fly or surf? ... Probably with that fish and bird, obviously.

At least this water type is useful.]
