[It's not too much trouble getting his hands on a wallet- he takes it out of some rich guy's pocket, so he doesn't feel particularly bad about it- and forgoes the Pokémon Center entirely in favor of getting enough food to last them to Ecruteak and a load of Pokéballs.

And just like that, they're heading straight out of town and to the next route, and Silver hands Ludger a Pokéball.]

Once you see a Pokémon you think you want to catch, just tell me. [Usually you'd need to weaken them first, but if they don't run into anything too tough, they can just hit its sweet spot.]

Anything. You see a creature, it's a Pokémon. And they're everywhere. In the grass, in the trees, in the water.

[He points at a nearby tree- a tail with a hand at the end of it droops down from one of the branches.] That's an Aipom. Its tail is stronger than any of its other limbs.

[That one... nah.]

And I can pick whatever I want?

As long as it's in this area. I'd say your first Pokémon is really special, but we don't have the luxury to pick and choose.

[There are several Pokémon around- a group of Rattata that wrestle with each other. A Heracross suckling happy on a tree. A Girafarig that wandered down from the route above that's considering staying here because the grass tastes great.

And a large fluffy piece of cotton candy that's in the tall grass.]

[Well, the Heracross looks kinda cool, but... he points out the Mareep in the grass.]

[Oh you mean that pink Mareep sure let him just-]

Catch it. Catch it quick.

[Did they seriously just run into a pink Mareep?]

Get its attention, then toss your Pokéball at the tuft of wool on its head.

Uh... okay.

[He'll start calling to it then, and once he has it's attention, he just lobs the ball its way.

... Like that??]

[The ball goes right over the Mareep's head, but it does get her attention, and she slowly struts over to Ludger with a big smile and rests her head on his leg.

...

Well, that's one way to do it.]

Is that supposed to happen?

Sometimes.

[Not all the time, but sometimes. Silver bends down so he can get a closer look at the Mareep.]

Do you want to come with him? [The Mareep stops nuzzling Ludger's leg just long enough to nod. Uh.

That's all on you, dude. Here's another Pokéball.]

[Okay.

Well uh... time to boop it on the nose with a pokeball?]

[She doesn't struggle! It's an easy catch.

...Well. That was a lot less difficult than anticipated.]

I'd say congratulations, but I'm not sure if I should.

[mahouchrono]

Yeah.

[There wasn't anything dramatic about it, so it doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment.]

[Silver pulls out his Pokédex to check a few things... and to show Ludger a picture of a normal Mareep.]

That's what they usually look like. I've never seen a pink one like that before.

[If going home doesn't work out, being a really lucky trainer might be something to look into.]

Maybe it's just a variant?

It is, but a Pokémon with a different coloration is really rare.

Gyarados is one of them. He's the only Red Gyarados I've ever seen in my life. [And judging by that lake, there are a lot of Gyarados around.]

You can let her out, you know. Are you gonna give her a nickname?

[So he's lucky? ... First time for everything...]

I don't know what to call her.
